JAPANESE STRAIGHT PERM

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Japanese Straight Perm?
It’s a revolutionary new technique that originated in Japan to permanently straighten curly, wavy, frizzy and hard to manage hair.  The process combines both chemicals and heat to soften the bonds of the hair to reform the bonds in a straight pattern.  After treatment, you will have straight, smooth, silky, and shiny hair that’s healthier than before the treatment.

Japanese straight perm is a sensitive treatment. Once the hair is damaged, it is very hard to restore it. Therefore, it is crucial to choose a professional salon with experienced stylists for this treatment.

Can the process be done on color treated and/or highlighted hair?
Yes and no. It can be done on color treated hair, and hair that has been highlighted up to 50%.  However, you should consult for full head of highlights, double processed highlights or extremely damaged hair.

Can it be done over a relaxer or Brazilian blow out ?
We recommend to wait about 2 years.  However, schedule an appointment for a free consultation.

How soon before or after the Japanese Straight Perm can hair color be applied?
Usually a minimum of 2 weeks before or after having the Japanese straight perm done.  However, we do not recommend home coloring and suggest having your hair professionally colored as special precautions need to be taken.

How long does the Japanese Straight Perm process take?
It usually takes an average of 3-4 hours depending on the length, thickness and condition of the hair.

How soon can I wash my hair after the treatment?
You cannot shampoo, wet your hair, nor exercise within 48 hours after the treatment.  Do not ponytail or tuck your hair behind your ears. Also do not put pins, clips, rubber bands, barrettes on hair as it may leave a kink in the hair.  Do not swim for at least 1 week.

How long will the Japanese Straight Perm last?
Once the hair has been treated, it will remain straight until it grows out and/or is cut off.  New growth generally needs to be touched up anywhere from 4-6 months after.

What about touch ups?
The new hair growth can be made straight again without touching the rest of the hair. The previously treated hair is protected by creams with protein lotion on it.  As far as the process time goes, it’s about the same amount of time or sometimes longer as hair texture may now be different, and the previously processed hair needs to be protected.  All hair must still be ironed and neutralized. The retouching process is often more difficult to perform, so it is strongly recommended that you go to a trusted salon.

What is the cost for Japanese Straight Perm?
It ranges from $250 – $350, depending on hair length, thickness, density and if any chemicals are present.
